Our Jobs are like Pumpkins

THE GREATEST PUMPKIN
It's this time of year when I see the wonderful sizes and shapes and celebration in diversity in the art of pumpkin carving. I remember my mommy calling me "Pumpkin" and I hear the pitter patter of tiny "Pumpkin" feet. I wait in anticipation for a taste of the delicious warm pumpkin bread that fills the air with it's familiar aroma and my memory recounts a story I was told as a young "Pumpkin" myself in a time that seems so far away and yet vivid in my memory now. I sat next to him in my Polly Flinders, lacey anklets and patent leather Mary Janes listening--hanging onto every word-- as the wisest, greatest "Pumpkin" I knew told me this story: Grace, a woman who worked in a very busy office never seemed to be overwhelmed with whatever task was before her. To each person who stopped by the desk, Grace was courteous, fully present and always willing to help. One day Grace was asked by a co-worker, "How do you stay so calm and centered in the midst of all the tasks that are before you to do?" A smile began to glow through Grace's face. After thinking for a moment Grace answered, "I remember that I am here to learn. I am the only one that can find joy for myself and make a conscious choice to then radiate the fruit of that joy to others. Each morning I ask joy to become part of what shines through me to others who will cross my path. Joy is one gift I can freely share. In this way, I allow my heart to remain open in gratitude to this job, my Joy Of Being. Joy is my job. My strength is my joy and my joy is my strength. This is why I believe I have such a capacity and ability to handle what could become overwhelming." Reflecting for a few moments, Grace's co-worker asked, "I like that. What is it like to experience true JOY?" Grace's story began: "It is is like being a pumpkin. "You realize you are not alone as you are picked up from whatever patch you are growing in, brought in and all the dirt is washed off of you. Your top is cut off and all the yucky stuff that has grown inside you is scooped out.
"Carefully, gently and easily, all seeds of doubt, fear, hurt and anger are removed. That new space within you now allows the love, peace and joy you want to share with others to have room to grow. "You are then carved, allowing the light of your inner joy to shine forth in radiant splendor reminding the world. As the coworker walked away she smiled at the revelation Grace had given her about joy...
I hope you enjoyed the story, and I wish everyone a very safe and special holiday weekend filled with Love, Peace and Joy.
